Red ElevenのインタビューRed Elevenのインタビュー
I caught up with
Tony Kaikkonnen (
Sons of Aeon,
Code for Silence,
Dark Days Ahead...) to talk about his new band
Red Eleven and its debut album
Idiot Factory...
メタルシップ : Hello Tony!
First, what initially gave you guys the inspiration to form the band?
Well, we all love 80’s and 90’s rock, grunge and alternative metal. Bands like
Alice in Chains and
Faith No More etc. are close to our hearts. That was the main reason.

メタルシップ : Do you consider Red Eleven as a real band or as a side-project ? Side project? Hell no!
Red Eleven is definitely a real band.
メタルシップ : What is the origin of the band name? Heh.. Well, let’s just say that it has something to do with getting punched to the nose.
メタルシップ : Did you make a conscious decision to write this kind of music or is that just what came out when you began composing?
We have composed together earlier as well, so it was a conscious decision to start doing this kind of material.
First we thought that we would just make few songs for our own fun. But then it got out of hand and we ended up with bunch of hit tracks enough for the complete album. We already knew the guys who would fit perfectly to our idea of a band for our music. So it was time to turn the Project
Red Eleven to a real ass kicking band.
メタルシップ : Please describe your writing process: is it a collaborative effort or does everyone have a certain designated role in songwriting?

For our debut album Teemu and I, we wrote all the songs. It might be that in the future others will be taking part to the composing process more.
メタルシップ : Idiot Factory is released via Secret Entertainment. How was born this collaboration? Jaakko Tarvainen from
Secret Entertainment heard some of our material and got interested. It was he who suggested the collaboration. So thanks Jaakko!
メタルシップ : Did you expect such an overwhelmingly positive response and good press?
We always knew that we were on to something but of course it still took us by surprise.
メタルシップ : How was the recording?
It was fun like it always is, everything went well. We did most of the recordings by ourselves so we got to do things on our own phase without hurry.
メタルシップ : Please tell us about the name Idiot Factory. What are the topics of your lyrics?
First I had an idea of making a concept album from one main characters point of view. Haha, I almost felt like I knew this guy since I had thought of so many stories through him. Later I gave up the idea of a concept but the album still has some remaining of it so it is kind of a mix of fiction and reality –my thoughts and his.

About the name of the album… Let’s just say that it is our silent protest against the way this society works. Everyone can figure it out by listening to the album and making their own version of it.
メタルシップ : Let’s talk about the song entitled Floating, which is quite mysterious… What were the plans about it?
"Floating" is a story about a man on his
journey to hell to seek for his woman. It is kind of a twisted mix of a bit darker lyrics and Santana-like atmosphere.
メタルシップ : Personally, I really like "Proud to be Proud", "Streets of Forgotten", "Like a River it Flows" and "Idiot Factory". What are your favourite songs on this record?
It is hard to name my favorites from the album. I have put my soul in each and every one of the songs.
メタルシップ : What is next for Red Eleven? Touring? Writing new material? We have already written songs for our second album and cannot wait to get back to the studio. Basicly we are just enjoying this whole thing: spending time on our rehearsal room, playing, making new songs and doing live as much as we can.
メタルシップ : To promote your album, do you plan to realize another videoclip?

Yeah, we have talked about it.. We’ll see.
メタルシップ : What are the professions of the band members and do any of you have any interesting hobbies besides making music?
Well, we are one multi-tasking band: one works with lasers, other with youngsters. One is a sales man and one makes music for a living. I myself am a tattoo artist. Music in its different forms takes most of our time but I and Pasi for example do martial arts.
メタルシップ : Where do you hope to see the band in the next 5 years or more? Do you think you'll continue in the same musical style?
I don’t believe the musical style is going to chance. Hopefully we will grow as a band and get to do this for as long time as possible.
メタルシップ : What were your favourite albums so far, and what albums are you currently looking forward to?
This one is always a hard one.. Well.. Can’t name one. Just got my copy of a new
Alice in Chains album.. Great one!
メタルシップ : What are the news fos Sons of Aeon, Code for Silence and all your other bands? Sons of Aeon released a debut album in the beginning of the year. Other bands are making new material.
メタルシップ : Finland is obviously a country renowned for it's metal exports, do you think it makes it easier or harder getting exposure coming from a country producing great bands all the time?
It has its pros and cons.
メタルシップ : Thank you guys for this interview! I leave you the final word!
If you haven’t heard from us before, go and check it out. Peace!
