Miasmalのインタビュー

Miasmal is not well-known here in France, but it seems that the band is going to be more famous with its second album Cursed Redeemer...

So let's talk about Swedish Death Metal with Pontus (vocals, guitar)!

メタルシップ : Hello Pontus!

Pontus: Cheers!

メタルシップ : Let's start off with a little background information. Could you tell us a bit about the history of Miasmal?

We started out in 2007, recorded our demo and first EP in 2008. In 2011 we released our first album and since then we've done a full US tour as well as a European tour, coupled with various shows in Sweden and European festival shows. In 2013, now signed to Century Media, we recorded our 2nd album Cursed Redeemer, to be released on April 21.

メタルシップ : Could you present us Cursed Redeemer? How did you manage to sign with Century Media?

Cursed Redeemer is our second album, 8 songs in 37 minutes. The album was mostly written in 2013 under pretty chaotic circumstances, however it came out great and we are very proud of it and can't wait for it to be released!
Jerry from Detest Records started working for Century Media back in 2011. We had been working with him since day one, he released our demo tape and also all of our other previous stuff on vinyl. So when he told us CM was interested in working with us it felt like a natural move.

メタルシップ : How would you compare it to your previous album?

Cursed Redeemer is in my opinion a bit rawer and more live-oriented than our previous stuff, with a tad more rock'n'roll thrown into the mix. I think you can hear that we've been playing a lot live since the first album, we have grown together a bit more musically as well. When we recorded the first album we had just played 2 live shows.

メタルシップ : Your new album was recorded at the mighty Studio Fredman. What was the recording process like?

Pretty quick and to the point! Me and Björn had just returned from a month-long tour in the US with our other band Agrimonia, so we were still jetlagged, haha. We had 7 days booked at the studio, and at day 1 we were already recording drums. We worked long days and consumed ridiculous amounts of energy drinks. Everything went really smooth, except for that I had a bad cold and had to return to the studio a few weeks after everything else was done to finish vocals for some tracks, since I lost my voice.

メタルシップ : The album cover artwork is quite mysterious. How does the artwork tie in with your music and lyrics on this album?

A lot of times, Miasmal's lyrics tend to be about some kind of apocalypse, catharsis or something like that. The song and album title "Cursed Redeemer" started out as only a phrase, the paradox of a cursed redeemer. This paradox can for example be seen in technology; since it is believed to be a blessing to humanity, but it can also be seen as a bringer of humanity's downfall due to our dependance on it, and the way it bleeds the resources and alters our surroundings. It symbolizes the paradoxes of human life and our failure to see a bigger picture. So the connections that can be made between the artwork and the albums contents is mostly lyrically, even though it's stark, direct approach reflects the music in a good way.

メタルシップ : If you had to describe your band in a few words, what would they be?

A high octane, no bullshit metal onslaught with a punky backbone!

メタルシップ : In the same vein, how is Miasmal on stage?

Just the same as the previous question, but with a lot of sweat added.

メタルシップ : Do you have any other tours/festivals lined up? Can we expect to see you in France?

We are planning a tour later this year, but we have no details yet. We'd love to come back to France, we played Toulouse and Bordeaux in 2012 and had a great time!

メタルシップ : How would you describe the place of the band in your own life?

It's very important. Since I also have two other bands, I'd say that music is my main priority in life.

メタルシップ : Hypothetical time! You're stranded on a deserted island. You have an
mp3 player of infinite battery life… but alas! It can only hold 10 albums. What would be on yours?

Bolt Thrower - For Victory
Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Dinosaur JR - Where you been
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Depeche Mode - Music for the masses
Disfear - Soul Scars
Songs: Ohia - The Lioness
Kent - Du och jag Döden
Ladytron – Velocifero

メタルシップ : Thank you for your words guys! I let you the final word!

Thanks to you as well, hope to see you in France soon! Check out Cursed Redeemer when it's released on April 21. Cheers!
