Butcher Babiesのインタビュー

Butcher Babies is coming!! Get ready for massive and heavy Metal!

Let's talk about the band with Heidi and Carla (vocals)!

メタルシップ : Hello girls! Could you tell us a bit more about when and how the band formed?

Carla: Heidi and I met in punk rock cover band six years ago.  We got sick of playing cover songs and decided to form an original project…something heavier.  We found the boys and from the first time we stepped in to a rehearsal studio together it was magic…we knew we had something special.

メタルシップ : You have two singers. Is it definitively an advantage to combine two singing aspects with two different personalities?

Heidi: I really think that it depends on the two people. I can imagine how it would be hard for most girls to share the "spotlight" of a lead singer. However, we have a special bond and we look at this as a partnership where we know and accept our strengths and weaknesses. We also know exactly how to compliment each others personalities. It means a lot that we are best friends and hve been for years. We respect each other, and I feel as though that is unique in two powerful women working together.

Carla: When we first started Butcher Babies it really was just to have a great time with our best friend…Heidi and I have been singing together for about six years now.  Over the last few years we really have developed our voices and how we blend them together for a very unique sound.  I consider myself lucky to be able to share the spotlight with my dear friend.

メタルシップ : Your imagery is very sexualized. Why did you decide to do that imagery? What sort of negative and positive effects do you get out of this very sexualized imagery?

Heidi: We aren't actually that sexualized. Initially, i think that people could have viewed it that way but, that simply is not the case. I'm assuming you are meaning the look of the nipple tape that was only present in about 6 months of when we first started the band. The nipple tape was never to be sexy, regardless of what anyone thinks. Butcher Babies is an ode to Wendy O' Williams and the Plasmatics. Which is music history 101. Wendy O' had a single named "Butcher Baby" and she also worn nipple tape. She was the originator of women in metal. We aim to continue what she started.

Carla: If you have never seen our band live, you may think the image is sexual….but in reality it’s not.  It is very raw and powerful…we aren’t on stage strutting around like models, we are putting on a high energy show with an old school punk rock/thrash metal vibe.  Our “look” has been a double edged sword for us.  In the past People would  get all riled up about it and say negative things before they even made it to a show.  However, as they say any press is good press.  All the gossip got people to notice us, haha!

メタルシップ : One of the amazing things about Butcher Babies is that you signed with Century Media Records right away. You had just released your EP and CMR showed its interest and signed you right away…

Heidi: We release our EP a year before we signed with Century Media and we were a band 3 years before they signed us.

Carla:This is actually untrue.  Nothing happens overnight.  Century Media had been keeping their eye on us for quite awhile, watching our progress.  They were at some of our earliest shows and thought they saw something special. Over a year later, when the time was right and we had grown as a band, they signed us. We had other offers as well, but by the time they signed us, Century Media was family.  They were the perfect choice.

メタルシップ : Let's talk about Goliath. How would you compare it to your debut EP?

Heidi: Goliath is an evolution of the band through out our 4 year venture and growth as a band. It was a more developed sound and unique description of our combined voices.

Carla:They are both great, but Goliath is a little more mature than our EP I think.  Its also a little darker in tone.  I also think that all of us really fell in to our own working with Josh Wilbur on Goliath, so the level of musicianship went up.

メタルシップ : What or who inspired you the most as a band during the processes of writing and recording?

Heidi: These song are about the growth of us as humans through out our adolescence and adulthood. It's about trials and tribulations that we all went through to get to this point in all of our lives. Each song aims for different emotions but, it's all among the same idea.

Carla: We all have basically been writing this album our whole lives.  I know that both Heidi and i used lyrics on this album that we wrote as far back as high school.  The words finally got a chance to come out and that was a very beautiful, cathartic experience for us. So, our own demons really inspired the album lyrically. All of the dark things in our early lives that we had to rid ourslves of to become healthy adults.

メタルシップ : Are there any interesting anecdotes from the recording sessions you're willing to share?

Heidi: During the recording of the song "In Denial" i was actually crying during the bridge. That song is very close to me explains a very hard experience in my life that shaped me into the woman I am today.

メタルシップ : Did you expect such an overwhelmingly positive response and good press?

Heidi: We honestly didn't know what to expect from the reviews and press but, we are so happy with the way that things have turned out so far. It's more than thrilling to see the hard work over the past 6 years paying off.

Carla: We didn’t know what to expect.  We knew that people had been waiting a long time for the album, so the week it came out we braced ourselves for the reaction.  We charted right away which was great! But even better, we knew our fans liked the album because as soon as it came out they were singing their asses off along with us at our live shows!

メタルシップ : You are touring Europe this month. How would you describe the difference in audiences between Europe and USA, if there are some?

Carla: Metal is a universal language, so the crowds aren’t to different besides the fact that the European crowd seemed a bit older than the United States crowds.   It was really a treat to finally tour Europe and meet all of our fans there!

メタルシップ : What are your favorite up-and-coming bands in metal?

Heidi: I'm really impressed with long time friends and past tour mates, All Hail The Yeti. They are a group of really talented musicians with some of the heavies t metal I've heard in a long time!

Carla: I’m a huge fan of thrash metal and i love that Battlecross are bringing it back in a big way! I see great things for them!

メタルシップ : What’s in the future now for Butcher Babies?

Heidi: Lots and lots of touring. We are also writing our next album. Keeping butcher babies thriving.

Carla: A second album but first we’ve got lots of touring to do off Goliath!!

メタルシップ : Do any of the band members have creative hobbies other than making music?

Heidi: I create custom womens shoes and t-shirts. I sell these on my online stores to make some sort of money while we are on and off tour. We're all broke musicians living for the dream.

Carla:  I write comic books and recently finished my first novel.  I also draw lots of naked ladies! I draw for hours every day when we are home from tour.  Pretty much the same thing I did alone in my room at eleven years old listening to Pantera!

メタルシップ : Any final message for our readers?

Carla: Our diehard fans that have been with us from the beginning since we had no ep and no album, just a few shitty youtube videos up, are the reason that we are here! Thank you all so much!

Heidi: DITTO
