The Drowning is coming back with Senescent Signs! The drummer Steve Hart answers Metalship’s questions about this new release.
メタルシップ : The Drowning hadn't released an album in five years. What did you do all these years?
There was a combination of things that lead to such a gap for us, from line up changes to technical problems in the studio being the biggest.
We had recorded over half of Senescent Signs when the hard drives and back ups were lost and had to start from scratch. Band morale hit an all time low when we received the news but we eventually got back to it with a clearer vision for what the album should be, so I guess the gap was a blessing in disguise.
メタルシップ : When did you start working on Senescent Signs?
We started writing Senescent Signs immediately after Fall Jerusalem Fall in 2011. James had just left the band but we continued writing the music. Once Matt joined the band we were able to construct the songs properly from the beginning.
We concentrated a lot on older material with Matt in the beginning and spent 2012 touring. It was summer 2013 when we went into the studio to record Senescent Signs the first time! haha
メタルシップ : The album title, Senescent Signs, evokes the flight of time. Does the cover artwork illustrate this theme? What is the meaning of the white cape and mask worn by the character and the pyramidal building overbearing them?
We have to give credit to Matt Vickerstaff for the artwork. We gave him free reign with the artwork, we simply gave him the theme and he created this amazing work of art. We gave him a few lyrics and early recordings of the album so he could get the feel of the music and I think he nailed it!
We’ve come to think of the steepled building as a gateway between youth and old age. The child like figure of death with his cocked head beckoning you through the archway. The decaying forest captures the sense of hopeless ageing and decay
メタルシップ : There is a great influence of Romanticism in your music: the flight of time is as romantic a theme as can be and Faust is the character of one of the writers who fronted this literary movement; but how would you define your music?
I don’t think we’ve ever tried to define our self’s, we have never sort of said ‘right, we’re a doom band, lets write something doomy’ we’ve always just written what feels right, if we like it, it stays. That’s how we’ve always done it. I know Matt has a few lyrics here and there which could be perceived as romantic like in “At one with the Dead”
メタルシップ : Romantics have a privileged relationship to nature that can be noticed in your music: The Drowning refers to water, there is a forest on the cover. Is nature an important source of inspiration to you?
There is something quite tranquil about nature, where I can be alone with my thoughts. The name The Drowning originally comes from the ritualistic act of murder so the dead decaying forest on the cover plays nicely into that.
メタルシップ : Metal is often considered ugly and presented as opposite to classical music, although elements of the latter blend perfectly with those of metal (such as a female opera singer for instance). Do you think enjoying this genre requires a specific mindset?
Yea kind of! I mean I like hearing classical music when it’s building, telling a story, but I don’t think I could sit through a whole classical performance. That being said, the construction of a lot of metal is very similar to classical, so if you’re into metal music and understand the mechanics of music there’s no reason why you couldn’t appreciate moments of classical.
If we’re talking about having a specific mindset for our genre, I’d go as far as saying a darker mind will definitely help enjoy what we’re doing.
メタルシップ : What is the reason for such a negative image of metal in society according to you?
I think people will always fear that which they don’t understand. I think a lot of people who find solace in metal are misunderstood and the rest of society paint us in a negative light simply through ignorance. At least we write with passion and genuine feelings rather than the mindless dribble that they play on mainstream radio.
メタルシップ : So few musicians live from their passion. Is being a member of The Drowning your full-time job or do you also have another profession that has nothing whatsoever to do with the music industry?
I know, it’s so hard to make metal a full time job! We all work our own jobs outside of the band, a few of the guys work office jobs, I’m a professional tattoo artist and our newest addition Dicky (Richard Moore) is a Chef which is awesome! We have no problem eating well while we’re on the road haha!
メタルシップ : What are your future projects?
We are already working on the new record, which is going very well. This is the first time Dicky’s been involved in the writing process and is proving to be a welcomed addition as he’s an incredible musician not just a bass player haha! We hope to be back in the studio towards the end of this year. And between now and then we’ll be on the road as much as possible.
